Marvel’s Secret Invasion was a disappointment overall, but one of its high points was Olivia Colman—a performer who elevates everything she’s cast in. The Oscar winner will team up with another similarly charismatic star, Dev Patel, for a very unusual-sounding new romance movie.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Wicker will star Colman as a fisherwoman, and Patel will play “her inanimate made-to-order husband” in what’s described as a “twisted romance” set to begin filming in 2024. The script is adapted by directors Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson—their last film was quirky sci-fi tale Save Yourselves—from a short story, The Wicker Husband, written by Ursula Wills-Jones. (Obviously, The Wicker Man was off the table for a title.)
Per the trade: “Colman will play a smelly and ridiculed fisherwoman in a seaside village where, fed up with small-minded neighbors, she commissions herself a husband to be made from wicker, who is played by Patel. In an otherwise conservative town, their unconventional romance sparks outrage, jealousy and chaos.”
Wicker sounds like an appealing mix of bizarre and heartfelt, and the two leads are certainly inspired casting. Will you be checking this one out when it arrives?
